About salsa and the music
Sensuality, passion, and sociality…that’s Salsa!

Salsa has since the beginning of the 90’s become one of the most popular social dances in
the world. The dance is a passionate distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. Salsa is a sensual dance which makes people happy, gives them a reason to smile, laugh, and be social.

The name "Salsa" is the Spanish word for sauce. The dance got its name because it’s a mix of the Cuban ”son”
and the Latin American jazz. Salsa is originally from New York but there is a strong African influence in the music as well as the dance.

Salsa is typically a partner dance, although solo steps are also often seen.Improvisation and social dancing are important elements of Salsa, but it can be danced as a performance dance too. Incorporating styling techniques into any variation of salsa has become very common.

For both men and women shines, leg work, arm work, body movement, spins, body isolations, shoulder shimmies and rolls, and even hand styling have become a huge trend in the salsa scene. The basic movement common across most salsa styles is to step quick-quick-slow 2 times over two 4-beat measures.

Salsa is a dance which you can dance in many different ways: Cross body style, Cuban style and Rueda de
Casino (groups of couples with frequent exchanges of partner).

The salsa music:
Salsa is danced to salsa music, which refers to a particular style developed in the 1960s and '70s by Cuban,
Puerto Rican, and other immigrants from Latin nationalities in New York. The music is the primary music played
at Latin dance clubs and is the "essential pulse of Latin music“. Typical for the salsa music is the use of
percussion, the fast rhythm, and the impact of other music styles. The salsa songs are characterized by positive, happy, and romantic lyrics.

Saludos, Salsa Brava
